Our work to uplift our community, share culture, and protect the environment.
We’ve transformed how our village handles waste by establishing a dedicated recycling center for paper, plastic, and cardboard. What was once dumped in the surrounding woods now has a responsible, community-run disposal point — reducing pollution and protecting the local environment.
To tackle everyday waste, we set up a large shared bin in the village — providing a practical solution where none existed. This simple addition has helped prevent illegal dumping, improved public hygiene, and made it easier for families to manage their waste responsibly.
We collect and strip old fishing nets, reusing usable parts and safely disposing of the rest. This helps local fishermen get more value from their gear while reducing ocean pollution and protecting marine life.
Each week, our international volunteers roll up their sleeves to clean the village fish market, main street, and public toilets. Their regular efforts help maintain a healthier, more welcoming environment for local families, vendors, and visitors — showing how small actions can make a big difference.
To support sustainable livelihoods, we offer discounted supplies and materials that help fishermen repair their boats affordably. This makes essential maintenance more accessible, reducing financial strain while keeping vessels safe and seaworthy.
We provide a safe, well-equipped space where local fishermen can repair their boats using modern tools and techniques. Alongside hands-on support, we offer training on PPE and smart practices — helping improve safety, skills, and long-term livelihoods.
We established a community classroom as a dedicated space for environmental education and flexible learning. It serves as a hub for teaching students about sustainability, while also supporting a range of activities — from workshops to community meetings — that strengthen local knowledge and engagement.
We bring skilled, diverse international professionals to the village to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and broaden horizons. Their presence creates meaningful cross-cultural connections, inspires new ways of thinking, and helps the community engage with the wider world.
Pomen Laut means ‘Sea Mechanic’
Pomen Laut is Malaysia’s first maritime FabLab — a hybrid boatyard and training space in Teluk Wawasan, Batu Pahat. We support small fishermen, educate youth, and run marine engineering programs in a safe, clean, and professional environment.
Yes! We welcome school trips, university groups, and curious crews. Just contact us in advance so we can plan a safe, hands-on experience in the workshop — using real tools and learning about marine repair, safety, and sustainable practices.
We also offer optional local tours (for a small fee), including mangrove visits, fishing trips, and even a behind-the-scenes look at a local coffee factory — a great way to connect learning with the local way of life.
